My abstract work is based on daily experiences in my urban environment – the gritty, industrial neighborhood of my East Vancouver studio, the iconic bridges I pass under on route , the railroad tracks I walk on during my breaks. I document these ordinary experiences and recreate a simplified version of the architectural forms and colour nuances that are part of my personal narrative as an urban artist. Construction and demolition, solids and voids, noise and calm are all opposing forces that inform my work. Ultimately, I am seeking balance in my paintings, as in my life.
“Our Brief Selves” from a line in The Language of Flowers, a contemporary novel about coming to terms with life’s ridiculous brevity. It is also about appreciating the beauty in order and simplicity.
